TWO Geelong clubs will unite as one on Saturday, August 5 in the hopes of bringing asthma management and destigmatisation to the fore of local sport.

The Zoe Kennedy Tribute Match featuring Newtown & Chilwell and Bell Park will take place at Elderslie Reserve in memory of former Eagles netballer and footballer Zoe Kennedy, who tragically passed away in 2020 due to an asthma attack.

The day’s proceedings include netball matches beginning at 8am, followed by football matches for Under 16s, Under 18s, and Reserves.

The main portions of the day start at 1pm, featuring engaging activities such as face painting, balloon twisting, and a silent auction.

Netball presentations, a ceremony, and pigeon release will be held at 1.30pm before to the seniors’ netball and football games between Newtown and Bell Park.

The day will conclude with a trophy presentation, live entertainment, food trucks, a raffle draw, and an art auction at 6pm.

“Zoe loved her sport and would be proud to see the sporting community come together to ensure that other kids with asthma don’t miss out,” Zoe’s father Lach Kennedy said.

“As a parent, your child’s health and happiness is the most important thing in the world, you want to make sure you’re monitoring and managing your kid’s asthma.

“With the Foundation, we’re working hard to normalise things like preventers, relievers, and to let people know that you don’t have to feel ashamed to use your puffer and speak up if something isn’t right.”

Local sporting venues will also be displaying specially designed posters by Geelong artist Georgia Naughton.

Players and spectators will be able to purchase purple “Inhale Exhale” beanies for $30 and scarves for $35, symbolising unity and raising funds for the Zoe Kennedy Foundation.

“We’re humbled by the support of the Geelong community, particularly the Newtown and Bell Park Football Netball Clubs,” Mr Kennedy said.

“There is genuine care for players and we’re proud of what this is generating in terms of Asthma Awareness in sport.”

Since its establishment in 2020, the Zoe Kennedy Foundation has made large contributions to supporting young people with asthma.

The foundation has raised nearly $300,000 to date and has funded a Virtual Care PHD and product trials for Puff-ah, an innovative smart inhaler system designed to improve adherence to asthma medications.
