CALCUTTA — Oak Glen senior Kamela Ward put her stamp on a 3-1 Golden Bear victory over Beaver Local on Monday.

Ward tallied all three goals to push the Bears to 4-1 on the season.

The Golden Bears grabbed the lead first when Ward scored with 14:52 left in the first half. Ward used her state track championship speed to create chances, but also credited her team with putting in the work.

“It was more of a team effort, we all back each other up,” said Ward. “If someone knows that I can’t make a run, someone else will make it for me.”

The Golden Bears, who lost for the first time on Saturday to big school West Virginia power Morgantown, were also led by goalie Cameron Michaud who tallied nine saves in goal.

The Beavers tied it at 1 when Karlee Cannon scored on an assist from Erin McComas with 36:02 left in the second before Ward scored to put the Bears in front 2-1 with 21:14 left in the second. Ward later scored her third goal of the night with 6:47 left in the game.

“Our girls had to work hard today, this was a good test for us,” said Oak Glen coach Bill Watts.

For the Beavers, this was also a measuring stick for their young team.

“I think they played with a lot of heart tonight,” said Beavers coach Liz Conner. “That was definitely some of the best soccer that we played so far this season.”

The play of Beavers goalie Tori Druschel really kept the momentum going as she finished the match with 11 saves in goal.

“I think that we continue to look at the positives that we made and continue to build off of them with changing the fields, winning those 50/50 balls and being aggressive on the ball as well,” added Conner.

Beaver Local will look to bounce back when they take on Harrison Central on Thursday.

Oak Glen will look for their fifth win on the season when they take on Weir High on Thursday.
