100 Years Ago, 1923: The Christian Endeavor Society of the Second Presbyterian church conducted a watermelon party at the home of Miss Betty Brian, Concord Road, Village Green. The lawn was attractively decorated. Thirty young people enjoyed the affair; Detective Sergeant MacNeal, while investigating a case yesterday, lost a bunch of keys. The detective is greatly inconvenienced by the loss.

75 Years Ago, 1948: The laying of the cornerstone of Chester’s newest church, St. Luke’s Episcopal Chapel, at Highland Avenue and Forwood street, Highland Gardens, will take place Sunday. Ground for the new structure was broken in October, last year. Plans for the building were organized several years ago, according to Rev. Van der Hiel, when the vestry of St. Paul’s Church recognized the need for an Episcopal chapel in Highland Gardens. St. Paul’s has been sending a bus to Highland Gardens for some time to bring youngsters into Chester for Sunday school.

50 Years Ago, 1973: Two divergent Jewish congregations that grew from the same root will officially reunite Saturday with the merger of Congregation Mispallelim, a Chester orthodox group, and Congregation Ohev Shalom, a Nether Providence conservative group. The new group will be known as Congregation Ohev Shalom with Rabbi Louis Kaplan of the namesake congregation continuing as the spiritual adviser. In 1924, a splinter group from Ohev Shalom founded Congregation Mispallelim. The synagogue at 325 W. Seventh St., Chester, has been Mispallelim’s home since 1951. Ohev Shalom dedicated its longtime home at Eight and Welsh streets in Chester in 1927. Its modern structure in Nether Providence was dedicated in January 1965.

25 Years Ago, 1998: Granite Run Mall is hosting a Beanie Baby Show Saturday and Sunday, reportedly the first ever at a mall. Both levels of Granite Run Mall will be jam-packed with all the new Beanies, plus retired Beanies going from $10 on up to $1000 for certain rare Beanies. Beanies are so hot right now that there are several magazines and price guides that cover the cute, cuddly stuffed toys, and those publications will also be available at the show.

10 Years Ago, 2013: Upland council opened its August meeting with an appreciation of two lifelong residents and volunteer firefighters who risked their lives to help a 77-year-old woman during a vicious attack and attempted rape in her home at Auburn Village. Doug and Marsha Scott, volunteers with the Upland Fire Co., were singled out for their quick response on July 9 with a certificate of honor read by Mayor Michael Ciach.
