Hats are incredibly difficult to pack when you travel because you run the risk of them arriving crumpled and out of shape.

At the same time, I find them to be an essential aspect of my holiday wardrobe, adding flavour and colour - as well as sun protection - to all my ensembles.

I’d never heard of Lorna Murray before writing this story but as soon as I saw her unique foldable caps, hats and visors - and celebrity fans - I knew it was a brand worth looking into.

Lorna Murray prides itself on crafting sustainable and ethically made headwear and bags for the jet-setters, including celebrities like Nadia Fairfax, Kate Waterhouse, Real Housewives star Kathy Hilton and Gossip Girl alum Kelly Rutherford.

Now I may not be about to storm down the Upper East Side alongside Serena and Kelly’s character Lily Van Der Woodson but with its eccentric Aussie flair, Lorna Murray can even be rocked on the seaside stretches of Bondi Beach.

Lorna Murray was recently voted “Best Hat Brand Overall” by Vogue Australia, so I decided to test out the $165 Sorrento Capri Hat to see what all the fuss was about.

I chose a medium size to be on the safe side.

Its arrival truly signalled how cutting edge online purchasing has become, with the hat arriving in a dainty box, fastened inside with a ribbon, an instruction booklet explaining exactly how to unfurl and re-fold it and the hat itself arriving in pristine condition.

It was luxury Australian fashion in a nutshell.

Firstly, the foldable nature of the hat is extremely clever.

It’s made from natural grass fibres so bends with ease and collapses in on itself so you can store it safely without stuffing it with tissue paper.

And then there are the colours. The range is extensive with smaller caps, brightly coloured maxi round hats and kids’ styles too.

There is no shortage of options to match any outfit.

The material is certified UPF 50+, which is essential when you’re holidaying under the summer sun.

We might be in winter now but those long summer nights are just around the corner and I can’t wait to take my Lorna Murray hat with me on the next adventure.

And I’m not the only one.

“I was impressed at how well they fit to your head. Their genius construction makes them super foldable and packable,” blogger Closetful of Clothes commented.

“Perfect for beach holidays and lounging by the pool of course, but they are also stylish enough for summer shopping and everyday sun protection,” said another.

You can shop the hats on The DOM and The Iconic.
